Ba-Chan came over to play Wii with me. First Ba-Chan made a Mii. Then we all did our Wii Fitness test for an hour. It was a lot of fun. I like doing my Wii exercises. Ba-Chan is staying for the Thanksgiveing weekend. I can’t wait to have terkey with stuffing, potatos, and pumpkin pie. I am haveing a great time visiting Ba-Chan. Tonight I’m going to watch Pinky and the Brain number three.

Boingboing points to an interesting series of scans posted by kokogiak, comparing the 1963 and 1991 edition of Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever. The 1991 edition was PC-ized by eliminating dated references to Native Americans, neutralizing gender roles, and replacing out-of-date professions with more culturally relevant ones.
These may be worthy goals, but the execution sometimes leaves something to be desired. Many of Scarry’s animals were fairly gender-neutral to start with, and making a bear construction worker more obviously female by putting a ribbon on its head seems even more sexist than the original picture. Why a judge is any more relevant than a soldier is unclear. And some of the edits, like this dentist’s species change, are just bizarre. (Not to mention badly done: By the 1980s Scarry’s eyesight was deteriorating, and there’s a noticeable difference in detail between his 60s and 80s artwork.)
This brings to mind when I was flipping through a copy of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in a bookstore, and I noticed that some of the illustrations were slightly different than the book I had as a kid (and still have on my bookshelf). Looking closer, I realized that the text and pictures describing the Oompa-Loompas were changed from them having black skin and being from Africa to them having rosy-white skin and being from “Loompaland”. I have mixed feelings about this: I can see why the book was changed, since British books of the time could be quite casually racist; on the other hand, I’m glad I have the book with the original text and illustrations in it.
As for Richard Scarry himself, here is an entertaining profile of his life. (warning—some coarse language!)

Last night I watched disk one of SpiderMan. At the begining of SpiderMan it said the movie was in color. I saw the words to the SpiderMan song on DVD. I sang along with the song as it played. It was fun. I saw this movie twice. When the movie was over I took a bath and got ready for bed. Tonight I’m going to watch disk two of SpiderMan on TV.

Couldn’t decide which picture to use, so you get both.

The phrase that strikes fear into all adults who hear it.
This has been an extremely bad year dentally for me. First my lower left baby premolar gave up the ghost, necessitating getting it pulled and replaced by an implant. Then in April my top right second-from-the-back molar started getting sensitive to cold. Several attempts over the months by my dentist to repair the underlying problems (bad filling, crack, exposed root—yes, I abused my teeth when I was a kid) were fruitless. The tooth just got worse and worse; and finally, after almost a week of excruciating pain (couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep), today I went to the endodontist to get the dreaded root canal.
Actually, after the buildup, the root canal itself was almost completely painless. I barely felt the anesthetic injections (all four of them). At the beginning there was a second of mild discomfort; that was the endodontist pulling out the remnants of the tooth’s pulp, most of which was already dead. After that I didn’t feel a thing, which made me mightily relieved. The procedure was long (two hours) and labour-intensive for the endodontist (lots of scrubbing the inside of the tooth with long, tiny files).
As the anesthetic wore off, however, I felt as though I had been run over by a truck (and note that the only other time I’ve ever used that simile was when I gave birth). It was worse than before the root canal; every part of my head hurt and all I could do was to try to become one with the couch and whimper. Poor Peter.
Now, several hours later, the Advil and Tylenol seem to have kicked in and hopefully I’ll be able to keep the pain under some semblance of control until the inflammation goes down. And maybe tomorrow I’ll be able to eat something more substantial than porridge.

During MEDEK I will watch Dr. Seuss. I will listen to the story The Cat In The Hat. At the very end of the story The Cat In The Hat I will watch the credits. I’ll clap to the beat of the credit music. After sapper I would like to watch the video Totoro because I like to see the pictures. They are colorfull and interesting. I like to go to bed later on Friday nights. The I sleep in on Saturday morning.
