Paella

PeterJon’s school’s cafeteria menu has fluctuated year to year, but this year’s is amazing. Chicken Cacciatore, Baked Sole with Rosemary Tomato Sauce and Mashed Potatoes, Garlic Shepherd’s Pie are typical entrées.

So Jon comes home the other day and says we should make paella sometime. Considering that we’ve never made it, I can guess where he’s had it! He even pronounced the word properly, which is more than I would have. Which reminded me of the first minute of this Posh Nosh episode: please picture Jon in the Richard E. Grant role, and me as Minty. Don’t strain yourself, though.

I’m sure our paella won’t be as good as theirs…

Jon’s current main dish fave is eggplant parmesan, which we had last weekend. It’s a bit of an ordeal to make for a regular (i.e. non-guest) dinner, so I asked him several times if he really wanted it, and he stayed firm. I think he especially likes it because he loves saying the name (in the Italian way: “parmigiana”; it’s pretty cute!). He did insist on having the leftovers the next day, but possibly only so he could keep mentioning “eggplant parmigiana”. Maybe we’ll have to teach him to say “aubergine”, so we can sound really pretentious…

I have to admit, the first time I saw Posh Nosh, I had just surfed into it and it took me a few minutes to get the joke. It did strike me that the chef reminded me a lot of Withnail, and that they were on the high end of the annoying chef bell curve. But it took them a long time to get to a joke that couldn’t pass as straight talk on one of the snobbier cooking shows.

oh my god! This isn’t a comedy sketch! I’ve found my brother-in-law’s secret other life! The only difference is he’d make only enough paella to give each person about–oh–a 1/4 cup serving so we could truly appreciate the ‘essence’ of the meal.
