T-ball

Austin puts the ball on our makeshift tee for Jon.

Jon didn’t mention it in his post about the cottage a month ago, but at sunset we had an amazing game of T-ball. Austin chose Jon for his team, versus his dad and me. Canny move, of course, since I also was Jon’s walker so while Jon was at bat or on base–which was ALWAYS–I was not fielding. Combine that with Austin’s home run swing, even with a wiffle ball, the two boys racked up serious number of runs.

Safe at first!

Jon would hit first, get to first base, and Austin would hit him home and follow him in. Over and over again. Dave and I just had time to get a few swings in before the mosquitos discovered us and everyone ran in.

Grandma and Grandpa’s house

(This story was written with almost no prompting. “Grandpa’s room” (office) has both a computer and a TV in it: heaven! — L)

My Grama

I love going to Grama and Grampas house. I am watching 398 and 546. I like going swimming in the water. I love going to Grampas room. I am going to the computer with my mom and my dad. I love going to the bed room for a story.

JCB

Another brilliant animated music video by Laith Bahrani (whose company is called Monkeehub) of a sweet song by Nizlopi. It’s called JCB (which is a construction machinery company) and can be found at www.jcbsong.co.uk. I highly recommend downloading one of the movie files to watch instead of watching it live, unless you have a fast computer. Enjoy.

Visions of our Future

The Toronto Star has the first of three-part series on the transition from school to adult life for developmentally delayed kids/adults. It’s probably not a surprise that the support system drops off a cliff after school is over. It’s tough to think about, but that is likely where we’ll be in 10 or 12 years…

A Visitor

(And he ate a lot, too! — L)

Who Came to Visit Me?

Bachan came to visit me. We played together. I played with my leap pad with my Bachan. I was showing Bachan play station. I loved going to the japanees resttront with my Bachan mom and dad. I ate tempura and salid. I ate meso soop.

Weekend roundup

(The first story is Jon’s excellent summary of the weekend. Lovely afternoon spent sitting on the front steps eating nachos and then reading his schoolbook. The second story is just way too cute! — L)

My Weekend

I loved working on the computer with my mom and dad. I watched TV on the weekend. Uncle David was building a side walk. Uncle David was visiting me. I liked pizza for dinner. I went to the corner store with mom. I was buying a bag of spicy Nachos. Outside I played with my leap pad. I was doing some homework. I did some reading outside at the front door.

My Mom

I love my mom when she is acting silly. She is lafing when she is acting silly. She is making funny faces. It makes me laf too. I hug my mom when she is lafing. That makes me feel happy.

Sidewalk shenanigans

This weekend Peter and David started work on the sidewalk. The first stage was digging the trench where the sidewalk would go. It’s amazing just how much dirt gets displaced when you need to dig down 9 inches or so (~4-5 inches of packed gravel, 1 inch of sand and 3 inches for the brick.)

Yes, we’ve already cracked wise about bodies buried in the back yard…

First snag: Turns out the gravel that was delivered was wrong – we asked for crushed (irregular chunks with little bits of grit mixed in); we ended up with washed (smoother pebbles, no grit). This was problematic, since for interlocking brick you want the rough gravel base to scrape next to each other, packing down firmly with no shifting between rocks. Dave found that mixing some of the sand with the gravel packed things down fairly well. Not perfect, but it’ll have to do.

Dave with the tamper, pounding down the gravel.

Of course, that meant we had to go buy more sand for the layer under the bricks…

Dave did a lovely job of laying the bricks…

Next snag: A tree that we had removed several years ago had huge roots, too close to the surface to ignore. Poor Peter spent much of Saturday and most of Sunday hacking away at the roots with axe and saw and not making much headway. (Not that he wasn’t getting anywhere, but rather that the roots are so frickin’ BIG!) There were a lot of comments &#8211 said only half-jokingly &#8211 about leaving the roots sticking up amongst the brick!

Peter has good reason to pout &#8211 that’s one big root!

So the sidewalk didn’t get finished, and we don’t know when it will get done. It will depend on a) when we can clear that root out and b) when Dave can fit us into his hectic schedule.

And then there’s getting rid of that 3- or 4-cubic-yard pile of dirt from our backyard…
