Yesterday we did our 2nd annual March break trip to Niagara Falls. We thought last year’s visit was the wettest you could get without rain; we were wrong! You can’t see from the photo, but Jon’s hair is soaking wet. You could barely see the falls for the mist.

Afterwards we stopped in at the Niagara Butterfly Conservatory (or as Jon calls it, the “Butterfly Museum”) and admired the lovely butterflies including this huge fellow:

Then we dropped in at Olson Foods & Bakery in St. Catharines; partly to see if they carried cocoa nibs (haven’t come across them within walking distance and I’m too lazy to do a protracted Toronto search), but mostly to give Jon a thrill. No Anna Olson, alas, but he was quite happy when given a promotional recipe card from Sugar.
Jon was chattering about all the great things he did that day, but for his creative writing project on Tuesday (see above), all he wanted to write about was the Wallace and Gromit DVD he watched Monday evening. C’est la vie!
Given her chef status, we had told Jon not to expect his heroine to be there, and it’s a good thing too. But the very friendly employee’s shoulders dropped when she learned Jon was a fan: Anna is actually there almost full-time, but she was in Toronto taping a show yesterday.
What influence on the upcoming generation! (I kid you not, Jon’s making lemon squares again today!!!)
I’d never heard of Anna Olson til Jon, then I see her yesterday on the midmorning show on CityTV, which is live and why you missed her in St. Catharines.
Small, sweet, world. Mmmm.
Next visit Jon bakes!
I love the picture of Jon and Laura at the Falls. Make sure I get a copy for next years calendar.
Glad to hear Jon is carrying on the Suzuki/Cook tradition of great baking.
Is that the same Sugar as on YTV? Does she really talk like that?
Oh wait, never mind. I see, “Sugar” is the name of the show?
Not sure if you ever get to Niagara Falls/St. Catharines in the warmer weather, but if you do, check out the Welland canal. Jon may enjoy the huge ships going by, almost close enough to touch. I grew up just blocks away from lock 7 (sometimes, you can see the top of a ship going by over the roof houses if you look out my parents’ back yard). If I’m near the canal, I still jump 10 feet when they blow the “cast off” signal.
(There’s a phone number you can call that gives times and nationality of ships that go by. The lakers are most common, and huge, but the foreign ships are neat to see, too. My girlfriend and I used ask them for coins to keep as souvenirs when we were younger.)
