Concussion

Laura Our family just can’t keep away from hospitals it seems. This morning I left with Photon for our morning walk. Peter said he’d clean out the eavestroughs, since they were jammed with maple keys and had overflowed during the recent storms. As I left he promised not to fall off the ladder. (Really, he did. Talk about foreshadowing…)

Fast forward to me coming back from the dog park. A neighbour was there with the news that Peter had fallen off the ladder and was now at St. Mike’s, though he didn’t seem to have any serious injuries. He was in the front of the house, thank goodness; apparently his fall was spotted by a passing driver and heard by our next-door neighbour.

When I got to emerg, Peter was disoriented, but seemed okay otherwise: no broken bones, neck and spine okay, no internal injuries. However the CT scan showed that it was a serious concussion and they would have to keep him overnight for observation. As of 9 pm he seemed a lot more lucid than he had earlier in the day (he knew what the date was and why he was at the hospital), but—not surprisingly—his memory of this morning’s events is gone. Adding to the unpleasant hospital experience, as of 11 pm when I left he still hadn’t gotten a room, so was stuck in emergency, with all the lack of sleep that that entails.

A big, huge thank-you to Grandma and Grandpa, who came down and stayed with Peter or Jon when I had to be with one or the other!
