Our New Look!

Tadaaaaa, now you know why it’s been awhile since we’ve posted! We’ve just changed blog software from Movable Type to WordPress, in part to try to better combat the comment spam we’ve been getting; though to be fair, we haven’t actually gotten that much comment spam for the last little while.

It took a while for me to figure out how to use and customize this blog (and there will probably still be a few tweaks over the next few days), but the fact that I could do it pretty much all by myself (except for a few head-scratchers where I needed help – thank you, Reid) speaks highly of the relative ease of use of this software. Now, maybe I can spend my time actually making posts!

Apt

Jon got to try out an iPod for the first time the other day. He had no idea what it was and got quite rigid with fear when we inserted the earbuds and encouraged him to hit the centre button. After some convincing he clicked it on, jumped when the tunes started, then slowly broke into a HUGE grin and breathlessly said “It’s a little computer that plays music!”. Which is a whole lot more succinct than Wikipedia’s description.

Visions of our Future

The Toronto Star has the first of three-part series on the transition from school to adult life for developmentally delayed kids/adults. It’s probably not a surprise that the support system drops off a cliff after school is over. It’s tough to think about, but that is likely where we’ll be in 10 or 12 years…

Passover Effect

This week, two Ohio State University researchers published an enormous study that refutes the commonly-held belief that terminally-ill people can will themselves to live until significant dates (eg birthdays, Christmas, etc) have passed. This is known as the Passover effect (due to one study involving observant Jews over the high religious holidays) and has been noted – anecdotally – for years.

The current study looked at 300,000 terminally ill cancer patients and charted their deaths statistically around their birthdays as well as around Christmas and Thanksgiving (as the two most important U.S. holidays). No significant dip or peak in death rates was found around any of these dates.

The researchers noted that their results fly in the face of anecdotal evidence, but state that there may be much wishful thinking involved in believing that people can live longer through sheer force of will. Some authors of previous studies (such as the Passover study mentioned above) scoff at these new results, but there seems to be a lot of “how dare these grinches publish this right before Christmas”-type criticism flying around.

But whether or not this current study is valid, the lead author, biostatistician Donn Young gives sage advice: ?I think the most important thing for all of us to take away from this is the notion of attending to what is important. In other words, don’t put off what is meaningful in life. Do it now, before it is too late.? Wise words indeed. Happy Holidays!

Blog spam make Peter-Hulk angry

Grrr. A very odd event, but the second time it has happened: I was deleting a spam comment to this post, and when I rebuilt it had become the message!!

The original message is gone. Not that it was much of a message. The first time it happened we thought it was an accident (hence the title of this post), but now that it’s happened twice, I’ll assume that someone clever with no life has found a little bug that allows this malicious hack. It apparently requires the right conditions–I must have been sloppy in how I went about deleting…very odd.

iTunes (Corollary)

The previous post – plus the disappointing fact that the iTunes store caters best to top-40-type tastes – got me thinking: what is the epitome of the perfect pop song? One of those confections that buries itself in your brain, probably boppy, probably short? Nothing deep or profound here, we’re talking pop!

I remember a radio interview with Tim Rice, who stated that his perfect example of a pop song was “My Little Runaway” by Del Shannon. Meh (tho’ it does have that great musitron solo). One of my top contenders is “Roll to Me” by Del Amitri (what is it about Dels and pop songs?)
