Race result

Posted by Laura.

Peter just ran the RunTO 10K today, and his time was a very nice 45:33. Woo-hoo! I can say I’m quite the proud spouse (especially since you won’t catch ME doing one of those any time soon!)

We were also quite chuffed to learn that he ran his 10K faster than the new Doctor Who, Christopher Eccleston, who ran one a week back at around 52 minutes. Of course, Eccleston also runs marathons. That’s not in the cards for anyone in this household quite yet!

Addition: Watch a video of Peter crossing the finish line here. Enter number “625″ and watch for a guy in white shorts bomb in from far left.

While in theory I approve of such things as physical fitness and outrunning Time Lords, I gotta say that I sure hated the Nike neighbourhood vs. neighbourhood ads. 1) They weren’t very funny, and 2) I hate the sight of slave-owning multinationals trying to act like hip local buddies of mine.

Yeah yeah heard all that–hey, believe me, I’m the biggest anti-corporation person around (not a big surprise with relatives like mine). And I wasn’t crazy about the ads either. But the race day sounded fun and I wish I could’ve gone to watch (a bit of a hassle getting a wheelchair to the island). But I’m glad you approve of fitness, even if it’s only in theory.

Yeah, they were irritating weren’t they? I saw one commentator in the paper rail at them and the company, but admit he was joining in the run. He grumbled that other10Ks don’t use such promotions, but let’s face it this was a big publicity event, and it attracted first-time race runners like me because it was so big and non-threatening. In the end, it was a great venue for my first 10K.

If it’s any consolation, there can be no doubt that simply by being there I lowered the cool quotient of the venue and the evil company by a degree of magnitude or two.

Oh ya, you know what? Almost nobody was actually wearing Nikes for the run.

Playstation

Posted by Laura.

Recently we’ve inherited a Playstation 1 set. (It started out as a customer incentive when Peter’s dad leased a new van, travelled between Peter’s siblings until they all got newer consoles, and finally landed in our laps.) It has a pathetically small library of games, including a Winnie-the-Pooh Kindergarten game appropriate for Jon.

Do they spike these video games with crack? Jon can only use one hand, and can only manage the buttons one at a time, which is not a very effective way of moving the cursor around. But within one day of playing the game – and despite not quite having gotten the hang of it yet –Jon was hooked. He begged to play more Playstation the next day, and it has replaced his afternoon TV shows as most-favoured-thing-to-do-during-break-time (too bad, Anna Olson!)

On the upside, we now have an extremely potent punishment, should we need to use it…

But on the subject of Playstations, here’s some questions for all and sundry: Where can we get old Playstation 1 games, new or used? And does anyone know of some titles that might be good for Jon? Anything up to approximately Grade 3 level; Kindergarten level would be just dandy. Most likely educational in focus rather than arcade-style: Jon just can’t see or move fast enough for twitch games. (Unless you know of any slow-twitch ones…)

Hi Laura, Gamerama on Yonge Street just north of Eglinton sells new and used games for all the playstations and X-box etc. Let your fingers do the walking! Give them a call and inquire to what they have that might be appropriate. Good luck! Tami

Hey, Jon! When we leave comments for you on your parents’ blog, do they read them to you or let you read them, and what do you think?
